Ephemeral moments,
eternal photographs.
In a world starved of human connection, where hazed eyes overlook the beauty of the mundane, what keeps the human spirit alive?

Who is Beatriz C. Fernandes?
“Saudade é amor que fica.” One of my favourite Brazilian sayings, albeit uncomfortably untranslatable; “the act of missing someone is merely a manifestation of love that is left behind.”
Born in Brasil, I grew up moving countries and slowly fell in love with the notion of a fluid life. Fluidity, because stasis, permanence, stillness, were states my life never enabled me to settle for. A trajectory full of change; I moved from Brasil to Germany, then to the United States, and now to Scotland. Unsurprisingly, the feeling of “saudade” has always been a constant in my narrative—missing places, missing family, missing friends, home-cooked food, good weather, child- and teenage-hood memories…
Somewhere amidst all the packed cardboard boxes and the empty old houses and the exciting flights to brand new countries I found this devotion for photography. For the past four years, this art has become my way of preserving the ephemeral. A way of capturing fleeting moments and eternalising otherwise forgettable memories. So to answer the large question hovering above this passage, who is Beatriz C. Fernandes? I am a photographer living between New York and Glasgow, and I specialise in street and business photography. My work focuses on documenting the quiet beauty woven into our streets, the beauty we grow desensitised to through overexposure, the beauty we fail to acknowledge when the weight of life starts to drain the humanity behind our eyes.
